About Emergency Response & Drill: Seizures Course
Emergency Response: Seizure - Recognition & Management is a focused continuing education activity designed for RNs and LPN/LVNs working in correctional healthcare settings. The course prepares nurses to recognize seizure presentations, protect patients from injury, complete immediate and postictal assessments, identify red flags, coordinate emergency response, and document events clearly and objectively. It also addresses seizure mimics and related emergencies, including syncope, hypoglycemia, stroke, overdose, psychogenic nonepileptic events, and withdrawal-related conditions.
What makes the activity especially relevant is its integration of clinical judgment with the realities of correctional healthcare, where delayed discovery, limited patient history, medication interruption, withdrawal risk, custody movement, and communication barriers can complicate emergency response. Learners apply standardized decision pathways, escalation criteria, and team communication strategies within the context of facility protocols and nursing scope of practice.
Through practical case discussions and competency-based learning, the activity helps correctional nurses strengthen emergency readiness, improve consistency in seizure response, and support safer, more coordinated patient care.
