About Elevating Nutrition Care: An Interprofessional Guide to Clinical Nutrition, Trauma-Informed Practice and RDN Partnerships

Elevating Nutrition Care: An Interprofessional Guide to Clinical Nutrition, Trauma-Informed Practice, and RDN Partnerships is a four-hour enduring continuing education activity designed to strengthen healthcare professionals’ ability to integrate evidence-based nutrition care into clinical practice. Led by Erin Smucker, MS, RDN, LDN, the course emphasizes interprofessional collaboration, trauma-informed communication, and the effective utilization of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to improve patient outcomes.

Through four educational modules, participants will explore trauma-informed nutrition counseling strategies that address weight stigma, food insecurity, cultural considerations, and patient-centered communication. The activity examines evidence supporting MNT in chronic disease prevention and management, including cardiometabolic conditions, kidney disease, oncology, and other high-risk populations. Learners will develop skills in recognizing nutritional risk factors, initiating appropriate referrals to Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs), and improving continuity of nutrition care between inpatient and outpatient settings.

Additionally, the course addresses practical considerations for integrating nutrition services into healthcare workflows, including Medicare and commercial insurance coverage, MNT billing and coding, documentation, and collaborative care models. By combining clinical evidence with actionable strategies, this activity equips healthcare professionals to strengthen interdisciplinary communication, expand access to nutrition services, and deliver compassionate, coordinated, patient-centered care.
