Women in Medicine®
About Women in Medicine®
Women in Medicine® (WIM) stands as a transformative force in healthcare, embodying the power of collective action and shared purpose. Founded as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, WIM has evolved from a small volunteer network into a nationally recognized movement that educates and empowers women in healthcare—alongside dedicated male allies—to drive meaningful change throughout our healthcare systems.
At the heart of WIM's mission lies a profound commitment to creating a healthcare environment where excellence thrives and barriers dissolve. The organization centers its work on three strategic pillars: supporting early and mid-career physicians and healthcare leaders as they navigate their professional journeys, conducting rigorous, science-backed research that drives real-world impact, and advocating tirelessly for the advancement of women's health across all domains.
WIM was founded by Dr. Shikha Jain, a triple board-certified hematology and oncology physician whose vision extends far beyond the clinic walls. As a Tenured Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois Cancer Center and a nationally recognized thought leader, Dr. Jain recognized the urgent need for systemic change in healthcare. Her experience as both a practicing physician and an advocate for evidence-based science communication positioned her uniquely to understand the challenges facing women in medicine—and more importantly, to envision solutions.
Under Dr. Jain's leadership as Founder and Chairperson of the Board, WIM has become a beacon of hope and empowerment for healthcare professionals seeking to make a difference. The organization creates vital spaces where physicians and healthcare professionals can connect authentically, collaborate meaningfully, and drive innovation that transforms both patient care and professional advancement.
What sets WIM apart is its unwavering commitment to evidence-based strategies and its recognition that true change requires collaboration across genders, roles, and specialties. The organization's values—empowerment, collaboration, innovation, community, and belonging—guide every initiative, ensuring that each effort contributes to building a healthcare system where every individual has the opportunity to succeed and lead.
Through strategic partnerships with healthcare organizations, academic institutions, and passionate supporters, WIM delivers innovative research, transformative leadership programs, and impactful advocacy initiatives. Each contribution directly fuels the organization's mission to build a stronger, more equitable healthcare system where women don't just participate—they thrive personally and professionally.
WIM's vision is bold yet achievable: to positively disrupt and transform healthcare by championing change that creates a world where women in medicine are truly empowered, supported, and equipped to lead. This connected community of healthcare professionals actively collaborates to dismantle barriers and ensure exceptional medical care for all, creating lasting change that resonates throughout the entire healthcare ecosystem.
